Tomten on needles - Tonttu puikoilla

As I have nothing finished to show you, (due to a fact that all 3 girls caught chickenpox and last 2 weeks have been very unproductive on the knitting front...) here's a wip that I've been working on for sometime now... Tomten jacket for A. Only sleeves are missing:-) and I'll put this knit (and all other knits I have as wips) on hold for a month as tomorrow is the 1st of February and the beginning of Yarn hamster-month! (trying to knit as much as possible from our stash... - should be fun!)

Ei mitään valmista,(lähinnä siitä syystä että kaikki tenavat saivat vesirokon, jota on sitten podettu viimeiset pari viikkoa - eli neulomisaika on ollut kortilla) joten pieni vilaus puikoille - jossa on valmistumassa Tomten-jakku keskimmäiselle neidille. Tosin tämä, kuten muutkin keskeneräiset neuleet jäävät pienelle jäähylle helmikuun ajaksi, sillä olen ensimmäistä kertaa mukana Lankahamstereissa. Tarkoituksena siis neuloa mahdollisimman paljon omasta lankavarastosta- ostamatta lainkaan lisää lankaa.

Bedful of yarn - Sängyntäydeltä lankaa

Hello, my name is A-L and I'm a Yarn Addict. (37.2kg of yarn...maybe it's only good that I have promised not to buy more yarn time being...;-))

Ehkäpä reilun puolen vuoden langanostolakko tulee ihan tarpeeseen:-)

(This is also not the whole truth, as I have more yarn in our old house and some in my knitting basket...

Experiments with onion skins- Värikokeiluja sipulinkuorilla

I had so much fun with my little dye-experiment. These are the first yarns I've ever dyed and I used onion skins for ease & availability... Amazing how different the colours turned out even though all base yarns were off-white.
Ensimmäinen värjäyskokeiluni langoille. Käytin kaikkiin samaa lientä jonka keittelin sipulinkuorista. Ja kaikki langat uivat siellä yhtä aikaa ja aivan yhtä kauan. Ihmeellistä kuinka erivärisiä niistä silti tuli - vaikka kaikki langat olivat alkujaan luonnonvalkoisia.

From top to bottom/ylhäältä alas:
Novita Florica (100% wool) - It has to have some chemical in it - the colour is gorgeous! (I was not expecting orange! I thought onion skins would colour off-white to yellow...)/ langassa on pakko olla jotain kemikaalijämiä tehtaan jäljiltä, sillä en muuten osaa selittää uskomattoman kaunista oranssia väriä - eikös sipulinkuoret yleensä värjää villan keltaiseksi? Tosi kaunis väri - tätä pitää tehdä lisää!!

Zitron Cambio ( 50%merino, 50%alpaca) outcome was somewhat more what I was expecting, rustic pale yellow. /enemmän sitä sävyä mitä odotinkin saavani. Vaalea kellertävä.

Ruskovilla (50%wool, 50%silk) -> very even , buttery yellow /tosi tasainen voinkeltainen värjäystulos. Ihankivajoo. (ei siis enempää tätä, slightly boring)

Baby Cables and Big Ones Too

This was love at the first sight. Saw the pattern in Ravelry. Admired it. Went immediately to buy some Jaeger Extrafine Merino DK from Cucumberpatch. And bought the pattern via Ravelry. Started knitting. Loved every second of it.

First of all this yarn is heaven. It is the best DK merino I've ever knitted with - soft, springy, has amazing stitch definition... Pure sensory pleasure. (and discontinued - which is a true shame...)
I would call this design a classic with a twist. It is essentially quite simple, but has just enough something in those cables that partly disappear... Clever! And the fit is perfect. Love it!!Pattern: Baby Cables and Big Ones too by Suvi S. (ravelry link)
Yarn: Jaeger Extrafine Merino DK in golden approx 600g
Needles: 4mm
Baby Cables and Big Ones too-pusero valmistui vihdoin.

Väri on lämmin "Golden", messinkinen vihertävänruskea.

Amazing package!- Uskomaton paketti!

I got a package from my secret pal yesterday.
It is amazing.
So amazing and huge that I dreamed about it last night. I cannot believe all that was for me! So much yarn! Gorgeous colours! Alpaca. Merino. Silk. (do I still need to go on?) Ahhh....
Take a Look:
Yarn to die for: Ewetopia Fibershop 100% superwash merino Hand dyed (I know - fabulous stuff!!) sock yarn in gorgeous colour (it's a bit more terrracotta-ish in nature- Love it!)
Berroco Ultra Alpaca Fine (50%Peruvian Wool, 20% Alpaca, 30% Nylon) in heathered dark plum . (I'm going to knit posh socks with it...) And Mountain Colours Winter Lace in Copper(50%wool, 50%silk) Just gorgeous. Wish you could feel it. So my colour.

Wildfoote Luxury Sock yarn (75%wool/25%nylon) in Ragtime (I have just the shoes to match:-) and 2pcs DP Wip Tubes although only one set in the photo because I just had to try the other one immediately. Works beautifully. Really handy!! (I cast on with Wildfoote right after taking this photo , It's going to become RPM )

Personal touch : couple of recipes that I (or my DH) have to try.. (Brownie pudding sounds delicious!) Jelly beans for my daughters. Although they are only going to get them when they behave well... (hopefully very soon!) The Sow's Ear-project bag in use. Holding my wip Tomten from Opinionated Knitter. (Previous gift from my secret pal)

I'm so happy:-) Thank you Secret Pal!

Hain eilen postista paketin Jenkeistä. Secret Pal oli todella pistänyt parastaan. Aivan uskomaton paketti - ihania lankoja, wip-kassi, pari herkullisen tuntuista reseptiä, vähän namia tytöille, wip-sukkapuikkokotelot... Olen melkein mykistynyt. (paitsi että olen jo luonut silmukat Wildefootista ja kassi & toinen wip-sukkapuikkokoteloistakin on jo otettu käyttöön.)Uskomatonta.

Startitis

I have encountered a severe startitis. So far I've managed to begin four(!) new knitting projects this year, and it's only 9th of January...
(I'm knitting mittens, socks, scarf & Tomten jacket) At the same time I've finished with knitting Baby Cables...-sweater, but all finishing ( weaving in the yarn ends, blocking) still needs to be done.
Good start for a year:-)

Mikäköhän olisi oikea sana tälle... Aloitusvimma?? olen tähään mennessä onnistunut aloittamaan 4 uutta neuletyötä - lapaset, sukat, kaulahuivin ja Tomten-jakun.. eikä mikään niistä ole edennyt alkukerroksia pidemmälle. Vielä.
Tästä tulee hyvä neulevuosi.

Iceland

I began knitting my Iceland top when dark news of Iceland's economical crisis hit the news - and maybe it was not quite the right kind of inspiration, as my Iceland top has definitely had a bad karma.
I don't remember when I would have succeded to misread pattern instructions as badly as I did with my Iceland. At first there was a problem with yarn, then I happily misread the length of neckline - and continued knitting quite a while before realizing it. Then frogged. Knitted more repeats to neckline. Knitted the whole main body piece and only when it was a time to pick up stitches to knit hem rib I realised that also sleeves were almost 10cm shorter than in the instructions. Decided that there was no way I was going to rip it back again - so my top has shorter sleeves. Which actually turned out pretty well as this is a rather weird layering piece.Pattern: Iceland by Stephanie White from Rowan magazine 42 (ravelry link)
Yarn: Polaris in "black" by Novita <600g style="color: rgb(204, 51, 204);">Needles: 10mm

Islanti valmistui ennen joulua. Erilaisia tietysti.
Lopputulokseen olen kaikesta huolimatta koko lailla tyytyväinen.

Bye-bye 2008 , here's 2009

New year - new stuff.
First my one and the only new year's resolution (in 10 years!) - will not buy any yarn between January 1st and August 1st 2009. I have a sneaking suspicion that I have way passed the whatever size the normal yarn stash is... I have a ton of yarn (not literally) and maybe I shouldn't buy any new yarn before I've used some of the old one - right? ... (I know this is gonna be really tough for me to keep - as yarn is my only vice - I just cannot resist lovely yarn - especially if it is on sale. But I promise I'll try!)

Then to last year - I've seen summaries of finished knits in other blogs - here's what I've managed to finish between March 2008 - December 31st 2008. (I only joined Ravelry in March last year so I have no clue what else I've knitted - some socks for sure and a couple of sweaters but there's no hard data on those ones so I stick to ones that I've recorded.)

Socks - 9 pairs
Hats/ headgear - 6
Scarves - 7
Shawls& wraps - 4
Sweaters etc for me- 11
sweaters etc for girls - 5

That's a total of 42knits in 10 months. More that I would have thought of.

Uusi vuosi - uudet kujeet.
Tuossa yllä vähän listausta mitä on tullut tehtyä vuoden 2008 aikana (maalis- joulukuun 31. 2008) Ilman kuvia ja vain kuivasti numeroina esitettynä.

Tein myös uudenvuoden lupauksen. (erittäin harvinaista - viime kerrasta on yli 10 vuotta!) Saas nähdä miten onnistun vastustamaan kaikki netin kiusaukset. Pitää varmaan olla kokonaan menemättä lankakauppojen sivuille:-)

Oikein hyvää uutta vuotta kaikille!
